Problem We are constantly facing challenges around the membership management feature (accessible through the little button above “Groups & Functions”.

Admins don’t know it is there and what happens when they click it (yes, there is a tool tip, but most users don’t look for a tool tip to appear). The knowledge base perfectly explains what the membership management function that you open through the button does and it is of great help in supporting admins to maintain the integrity of their data (and I got more ideas to make it even better – a story for another time).

Nonetheless, many support requests that we are receiving are about membership management and the answers are always the same (show them where to look and refer to the KB) because people don’t understand how it works and don’t educate themselves. In addition, most of data clean-up activities performed by me are a result of incorrect membership management.

Solution One way of mitigating the problem is education and education is time consuming and must happen again and again. The other way is to make functionality more intuitive, so it does not have to be taught.

How can we make that button stand out more and label it better? In my mind (without taking into consideration any limitations imposed by the platform), membership management on profile level takes an “in your face approach” by appearing front and center (of course only for admins):

The above mockup is meant as a starting point for a wider discussion on how we can make it more intuitive for users to manage memberships.

Another area to be considered is the dynamic actions dropdown that appears when you select a contact in the Contacts list (see screenshot below). It should contain an entry leading to the same membership management popup than the button on the profile. (other things could change here as well and those are dependent on that other story I threatened you with earlier 😉 ).
